Food & Nutraceuticals

Although they are required to ensure a proper supply of calcium, calcium-rich foods such as dairy products are often not consumed in sufficient quantities. Intolerances, such as lactose intolerance or milk protein intolerance, lead to a reduced intake of dairy products. Therefore, calcium-fortified foods and supplements have been developed to prevent calcium deficiencies and to fill the gap between calcium recommendation and intake.

A regular intake of calcium is essential. Insufficient calcium can lead to reduced bone density and osteoporosis, a disease where the bones become brittle and porous and more prone to fractures. Calcium is vital in building the strength and structure of bones and teeth. While calcium is mostly concentrated in the bones, small amounts circulate in the bloodstream and control muscle contraction and blood clotting.

Calcium is the most widely occurring essential macromineral in the human body, amounting to approximately 2% of our total body weight. 99% of this calcium is contained in our bones, which not only grow and are repaired but also serve as a sink, regulating the calcium concentration in bodily fluids through continuous regeneration.

A variety of foods, including dairy products, contain naturally occurring calcium. However, the absorption of calcium is influenced by various factors, such as other nutrients contained in the food. Consequently, only about 30% of the calcium from dietary intake is absorbed by the human body.

The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) in the European Union is 800 mg of calcium per day, independent of gender or age.

The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) in the US is 1000 mg/day for adults between the ages of 19 and 50, and even higher for adolescents and postmenopausal women.

Omya’s food-grade calcium carbonates are high purity, naturally quarried products specially designed for the food industry and compliant with the most stringent international standards (E170 purity standard and the Food Chemical Codex). Food-certified production such as HACCP and integrated quality management systems like ISO 22000, ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 ensure our products satisfy regulations worldwide. Omya’s calcium carbonate products are specially designed and approved for use in food, and are an effective calcium source for fortified foods and supplements. Besides providing calcium as a nutrient, they can take over various technological functionalities in fortified foods, including:

  • White pigment E170
  • pH buffer
  • Carrier
  • Extrusion aid
  • Anti-caking agent
  • Gelling agent
  • Dusting agent
  • Bulking agent
